Migrating Wayfairs Websites
When I joined Wayfair there was an immediate need to move off of multiple homegrown content management systems (CMS).
With a clear vision I worked across 300+ partners and five internal organizations (with different funding, leadership, and roadmaps).
I was able to move over 130 teams off of different systems, including hard coding, into Contentful which is a headless CMS. This project took me over a year and a half, working to get on roadmaps, get stakeholder buy-in, and design the content models.
When this project was wrapping up I saw the need for a Content Operations team focused on maintaining clear content governance across all teams, disciplines, and types of copy. After building out a team, we were able to focus on scaling into more localized and translated content.
Migrating to one CMS pitch
"Content strategy should be responsible and accountable for our messaging, yet with our current tools we don’t have any ownership over our content.
Moving our text into a singular content management system (CMS) reduces time CxS spends on finding text, requesting updates, testing into text, and archiving content.
Contentful being the source of all truth enables us to cross-pollinate our content across different teams. Contentful is headless CMS, meaning it is a back-end only content repository, keeping the content stored in it and the display layer/presentation separate. This allows the content to be reusable across different platforms, devices, features, and pages- adding a level of collaboration we currently don’t have for text across teams.
Not only are we removing the need to depend on engineering to alter or adjust our content, but we are now able to test into our text and change our text once it is launched without engineering support.
Migrating to Contentful not only saves content strategy time and energy but it enables us to better support multiple projects at scale through repurposing existing content.”
